What happens when a piano is tuned?
Piano strings are strung along a complex path of corners and turns!
From the tuning pin across the bridge and back to the cast iron frame.
When a piano is tuned, all these varying tensions are adjusted to achieve
“concert” pitch.
How often does a piano need tuning?
The combined tension of a pianos string often exceeds 15.000 kg!
One of the tuners major challenges is for the tuning to remain fixed
or stable for as long as possible. In order to keep the instrument at
concert pitch (for which it had been designed). Every instrument should
be tuned at least once per year, even if it is not in use. Multiple tuning
over a short term are usually required to bring an instrument back to concert
pitch particularly if the instrument had been neglected for a few years!
